چکیده

To study the left atrial function after cardioversion, left ventricular apex cardiogram, electrocardiogram, unipolar and bipolar oesophageal electrocardiogram, and cardiac catheterization were done after 39 procedures in 37 patients with rheumatic heart disease and 2 with atrial septal defect. An 'a' wave in the apex cardiogram representing left atrial contraction appeared in 31 of the 32 records taken 8 hours after cardioversion. Oesophageal electrocardiograms were recorded in I8 patients and in each instance showed separate right and left atrial components ofP wave in the unipolar records and large left atrial waves in the bipolar records. In the pressure tracings an 'a' wave appeared in I9 of the 20 patients in the right atrium and I3 of the i6 subjects in the pulmonary arterial wedge immediately (20 to 40 minutes) after cardioversion. The mean pulmonary arterial wedge pressure decreased after cardioversion in each case. In spite of this the left ventricular stroke work index increased relatively in I2 of the I5 patients, showing improved cardiac performance. It is concluded that there is no true disparity between electrical and mechanical activity of the left atrium, and both are usually restored soon after cardioversion.

The Effect of Bronchial Asthma on Interatrial Electromechanical Delay Coupling Obtained Using Tissue Doppler Imaging

Background: Asthma is a predisposing factor for the development of atrial fibrillation. Asthma disturbs the electrophysiology in the right and left atrium. The aim of this study was to evaluate atrial electromechanical delay by coupling obtained from tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 50 patients with Bronchial Asthma, compared with 50 hea...

Atrial and ventricular function after cardioversion of atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE Previous studies on atrial recovery after cardioversion of atrial fibrillation have not taken into account new knowledge about the pathophysiology of transmitral and transtricuspid flow velocity patterns. It is possible to shed further light on this problem if atrioventricular inflow velocity, venous filling pattern, and atrioventricular annulus motion are recorded and interpreted tog...

Does atrial fibrillation affect plasma endothelin level?

BACKGROUND Atrial fibrillation (AF) may result in endocardial endothelium dysfunction. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the plasma concentration of endothelin-1 (ET-1) during persistent AF and after sinus rhythm recovery following direct-current cardioversion and to assess the predictive value of ET-1 in AF patients. METHODS The study group consisted of 43 patients with persist...

Atrial myocardial deformation properties are temporarily reduced after cardioversion for atrial fibrillation and correlate well with left atrial appendage function.

AIM This study was conducted to evaluate whether left atrial strain and strain rate correlate well with transesophageal parameters of stunning after atrial fibrillation. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-two consecutive patients with chronic atrial fibrillation >/=3 months and <1 year were enrolled in the study. Transthoracic (TTE) and transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography with color Doppler myocar...

Clinical variables affecting recovery of left atrial mechanical function after cardioversion from atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate the effect of clinical factors on recovery of atrial function after cardioversion for atrial fibrillation. BACKGROUND Lack of effective mechanical atrial function (EMAF) after cardioversion of atrial fibrillation predisposes to thromboembolic complications and delays improvement in functional capacity. METHODS Fifty-two patients underwent cardioversion (grou...
